01/22/16 - 1/2 and 3/4 AP Chem - U9 LAB: Determination of Ka

pH, Indicators and Titration Curves

-----------------------------------------------------------

Learning Goals
  1. Determine the Ka of an unknown acid.
Agenda
  1. Bell Ringer
    1. Get goggles and aprons.
    2. Go to lab and:
      1. hook up your Spark and pH probe
      2. get a 24-well plate and make sure you have three CLEAN AND DRY wells you can use for buffer solutions (I will explain in a minute).
      3. Choose an unknown from the set of vials at the front.
      4. Pre-lab at the bell.
  2. Post-lab
    1. Clean up responsibilities
    2. Write-up
  3. Pre-lab
    1. Pre-lab assessment
    2. Safety (...and your lab grade)
    3. Clean up responsibilities  (...and your lab grade) - CLICK HERE
    4. Reminders
      1. How will you write up procedures for two trials on the same acid?
      2. How do you calibrate the pH sensor?
      3. How do you change the number of sig digs reported on the Spark to what you need (...and what do you need anyway?)?
Big Ideas
  • Big Idea 3:  Changes in matter involve the rearrangement and/or reorganization of atoms and/or the transfer of electrons.
  • Big Idea 6:  Any bond or intermolecular attraction that can be formed can be broken. These two processes are in a dynamic competition, sensitive to initial conditions and external perturbations.
