Learning Goals
- State the three rules and give examples of how they govern electron assignment:
- Aufbau Principle
- Pauli Exclusion Principle
- Hund’s Rule
- Write correct expected long electron configurations for any given element.
- Identify the “valence electrons” and “core electrons” in an electron configuration.
(see 003 for other learning goals under "Electron Configuration".
Agenda- Bell Ringer
- Study you periodic table and continue (as we did yesterday) to compare the Aufbau diagram to the table. We will pick up where we left off shortly.
- Write the electron configurations for the following elements using your periodic table or Aufbau:
- lithium
- sodium
- potassium (and orbital notation)
- rubidium
- neon
- bromine (and orbital notation)
- iron (and orbital notation)
- Notes - Atomic Structure and Electron Configurations (Electron Arrangement)
- Similarities, differences, behavior
- f-block electron configurations
- Reading DIRECTLY from the black periodic table.
- Shorthand electron configuration
