11/13/15 - 1/2 and 7/8 - C2H K4 Reaction Order by Graphing

Today's Agenda

Learning Goals
  1. Use the integrated rate law to determine the order of reaction:
    1. graphically by a y=mx+b relationship
    2. mathematically using the appropriate relationships
    3. using half-life determinations.
  2. Use a TI-84 calculator or spreadsheet to use the integrated rate law to determine the order of reaction for a given set of data.
        Agenda
        1. Bell Ringer
          1. Compare your HW answers with your lab partner.  Make notes and corrections in ink, then post to GC by time called if you want to. Since I accidentally put 11:59 PM for time it is due, I will honor that.  SHOW ME ALL WORK!
          2. Get ready for next set of notes.  You need a calculator or and a new spreadsheet in Sheets.
        2. Activities
          1. Review "I Can" - What have we learned so far?
          2. AP Essays - comments and examples.
          3. Direct Instruction - Using Graphing to Figure Out Reactant Order
          4. Guided Practice - Problem Set 2, C12
        3. Closure
          1. Posting to GC.
            1. App is okay but when it doesn't work, use your CB.
            2. Date and time are set so that you can post at school if necessary.
            3. Postings are often for feedback.
          2. AP Essays on your checklist - do them.

        Prepare for the Next Class
        1. Check the calendar (on this blog)
        2. Post questions to GC

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CALCULATOR DO ALL OF THE MATH!
        1. Turn on diagnostics first and clear your lists
        2. Enter your data in the lists
        3. Graph and do a linear regression
        4. Remember r and r squared must be as close to 1 as possible.
        5. Remember what SLOPE represents.  Is it k or -k??????  Solve correctly. The rate constant, k, is ALWAYS positive when reported in the rate law.
